Swayambhu (also spelt Svayambhu) means self-manifested, and refers to Hindu murthis which are considered to be self-manifestations of the deity.

Eight Most Sacred Swayambhu Murthis of Sri Vaisnava Sect

According to the Sri Vaisnava sect of Hinduism, there are eight Svayam Vyakta Ksetras or temples containing Swayambhu murthis. These eight are located as follows:

  • Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam
  • Lord Venkateswara at Thirumala
  • Lord Badrinarayan at Badrinath
  • Lord Bhuvaraha at Sri Mushnam
  • Lord Devarajan at Naimisaranya
  • Lord Totadri Naadhan at Thirunelveli
  • Lord ParamaPurusha at Pushkar
  • Lord Muktinath at Muktinath
