Sundara Kanda is the fifth book in the Ramayana epic, describing the adventures of Hanuman. The original Sundara Kanda is in Sanskrit and was composed by Valmiki. There are other versions of the Sundara Kanda in other languages such as Bhojpuri, for which the book was composed by the saint Tulsidas (much later than the original Sundara Kanda).

The Sundara Kanda is said to contain the essence of the Ramayana and most adherents to the Hindu faith will be found reading the essence of the Sundara Kanda which is called as the Hanuman Chalisa at times of distress or when spiritual need arises.
