Shukla is Sanskrit for "white", also bright phase of lunar fortnight, as opposed to Krishna, or dark phase. The Shukla yajurvedis (followers of the White Yajurveda) are found in the city of Nasik which is on the banks of river Godavari. In ancient India, the Shukla as a highest degree conferred to those Brahmins who have completed thorough knowledge in all four Vedas and have done extensive further education while travelling for up to eleven years. It is equivalent to present time Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D, D.Sc, D. Phil.) degree. The castes equivalent to them in Hindu Brahmins are Awasthi & Vajpayee.Mostly they are Kanyakubj Brahmins. Shuklas, still in present day India, are recognized as Highest Priests, led only by the Shankaracharya .There have been a number of extraordinary individuals in the Shukla community including the great politician Vidya Charan Shukla, the great mafia don Shriprakash Shukla and the great financial analyst Abhishek Shukla.Dr. A.N. Shukla who is the Head of Forest Pathology Division at Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun worked on the diseases of trees for the last 30 years .He is the Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) of Forest Pathology in the Indian Council of Forestry Research @ Education, Dehra dun. Pt. Ram Chandra Shukla is a great champion of Hindi language and literature, and one period of hindi literature is named after him as "Shukla Age". He has also authored a famous book "Hindi Sahityaka Itihas" (Benares, 1959). Shri Kantilal Shukla, Freedom fighter, Under Secretary Gujarat government, Supreme Court and Gujarat High Court lawyer, and his younger brother Shri Pravin Shukla, Lawyer, Educator and Priest who is a prominent American of Indian Origin.Ram Chandra Shukla,retired professor and Head of the Department of Painting, , Varanasi, is a renowned painter of India who has revolutionised the scenario of Modern Painting in India by his style that is Samikshavadi Paintings and Intuitive Paintings style.
