Saptaŗişhi or Saptarşi (सप्तर्षि, pronounced as "səptərŞhi") in Sanskrit means the Seven Sages or rishis who are extolled at many places in the Vedas and other Hindu literature. The Vedas never actually enumerate these rishis by name, though later texts do so. They are regarded in the Vedas as the patriarchs of the Vedic religion. The constellation of Ursa Major is also named as Saptarshi. Names of the Saptarishis (incomplete)There are many contradictory lists of the names of the Saptarishis. These usually include Atri, Kashyapa and Vasishta, but the other four are varying. One such list is used in the Sandya Vandanam: Atri, Brighu, Kutsya, Vasishtha, Gautama, Kashyapa and Angirasa. Other lists include Vishwamitra and Jamadagni. In hindu astronomy the seven stars of the Saptarshi Mandal or Big Dipper are named as 1) Kratu ( Dubhe/α UMa), 2) Pulaha ( Merak/β UMa) , 3) Pulastya (Phecda/γ UMa) , 4) Atri ( Megrez/δ UMa, 5) Angira (Alioth/ε UMa), 6) Vasishtha (Mizar/ζ UMa) and 7) Marichi (Alkaid/ η UMa). Vasishtha is accompanied by his wife the faint companion star Arundhati (Alcor/80 Ursa Majoris). |
