Kunbi, or kanbi, have mastered all types of professions and many of them have achieved high regards in diverse fields, including agriculture, engineering, industrialization, sports, defense, domestic and international politics, medical professions, religious studies, astrology, theatre & arts etc. They are difficult to be classified as per the perplexing Hindu caste system, because for the past many centuries they have been practicing occupations that can be a collective function of Vaishyas, Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Shudras, but they are most commonly associated with the Shudras. The Mahabharata tells that the Parashurama killed all Kshatriyas so all non-Brahmins are Shudra. This caste kunabi has played a significant role in the national, regional, and international politics for at least the past ten centuries. King Shivaji was a great warrior among the Shudras but the Brahmins rejected his coronation because as per Hindu Philosophy this is Kali Yuga and in KaliYuga there are only two Varnas; those are Brahmins are Shudras. King Shivaji forced Brahmin GagaBhatt to perform his coronation on 6th June 1674. There is a inferiority complex among all Shudra castes and they think that their forefathers were Kshatriyas even though present day they are Shudras.

Just like other castes it also has 12/1\2 sub castes named as (1) Tirale Kunabi (2)Jadhao Kunabi (3)Zade Kunabi (4)Zod kunabi (5)Bawane Kunabi (6)Lonare Kunabi (7)Dakhane Kunabi (8) (9) (10) (11) (12) (1\2)

Other regional groups similar to them are shudra Kurmi which the word kunbi is related to and shudra Jats who are farmers in the northwest etc.

Several so called Kunbis are well placed government officials and educationists.

Are Kunbis known as Marathas ?

There is a great amount of confusion between words Kunbi and Maratha-kunbis although surnames and social status may be same.Marathas as such a vast social class ,it consists of royal clans and also farmers. Marathas are also considered as the descedents of Lemurians since the currently known land mass called "Maharashtra" was originally the capital of Lemuria. Many Marathas have identified themselves as kunbi's, although some of them may belong to 96 clans of Marathas. Many Kunbis perform the Upanayana Samskara as per their family traditions. Working class kunbi’s

and Marathas have tactfully preserved the ancient Hindu rituals even under the strict tyrant rule also known as British Raj. Maratha or Kunbis together constitute approximately 55% population of Maharashtra. Many Kunbis having larger lands, employeed other working classes kunbi's under the distinct sectors of defense, administration, agriculture and cultural development all the way long. The kind of wealthy Kunbi's had larger houses made of stone, some were called WADA, some were GADHI (fortressed complex) and some also had KEELLA (a fort). Most of the historical evidences are as on date managed & maintained by National (India) & State (Maharashtra) level government departments. Although there are a few families who maintain their own set of documents or evidences as a mark of family assets. Many Kumbi's even though being Marathas had to disguise themselves into other castes to save their families from the ongoing suppression carried out during British Raj. During Government Census of 1952 where the ancient four tier caste system that existed in Northern India was extended to Maharashtra region as against the advice of removal of caste system suggested by 17th Century poet Saint Tukaram and many other Marathi Saints. Marthas are basically vegetarian, although some sectors of Marathas have taken up non-vegetarian diet mostly during the tenure of British Raj.
