Jayapataka Swami was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, North America. He studied at Brown University on full scholarship and left after a short time to go to Montreal and met His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. After their meeting, he was initiated as Jayapataka Das Brahmacari. Jayapataka served as Pujari and later as the Temple President of the Montreal temple, and also assisted in founding the Toronto, Canada and Chicago, USA temples of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

During 1970 he was initiated into the renounced order of life, Sannyasa, by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. He received the name Jayapataka Swami.

After the passing of Srila Prabhupada, Jayapataka Swami began accepting disciples on behalf of the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya. Presently he is one of the initiating spiritual masters (guru) of ISKCON and a member of the Governing Body Commission (GBC), and is also divisional trustee for the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT).
