His Highness Sri. Jaya Chama Raja Wadiyar Bahadur (1919-1974), or more commonly known as Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar and also known by many other variations like Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, Jaya Chamarajendra Wadiyar and many times Wadiyar replaced with the more popular form Wodeyar and at times with the royal suffix Bahadur, was the 25th and the last King from the illustrious Wadiyar (Wodeyar) dynasty which ruled the Indian state, the Kingdom of Mysore, from 1399 to 1950. He was a Philosopher, Musicologist, Political thinker and Philanthropist. Born on July 18, 1919, he was the only son of Yuvaraja Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar and Yuvarani Kempu Cheluvaja Amanni. He graduated from the Maharaja's College, Mysore in 1938 bagging five awards and gold medals. He then toured Europe during 1939, visiting many associations in London and became acquainted with many artists and scholars. He ascended the throne of the Mysore on September 8, 1940 after the demise of his uncle Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. He signed the Instrument of Accession with the Dominion of India on the eve of India attaining Independence in August 1947. The state (Mysore Kingdom)) was merged with the Republic of India on 26-1-1950. He held the position of Raj Pramukh (Governor) of the State of Mysore, 1950-1956. After the integration of the neighboring Kannada-majority parts of the States of Madras and Hyderabad, he became the first Governor of the reorganized or unified State of Mysore, 1956-65 and later was transferred as the Governor of the State of Madras (Tamil Nadu), 1964-67. He died on 23-9-1974.
SportsHe was a good horse-rider and a tennis player. He was also well known for his marksmanship and was highly sought after by his subjects when ever a rogue elephant or a man eater tiger attacked their immediate surroundings. There are many wild life trophies attributed to him in the Palace collections. He helped Mr. Ramanathan Krishnan to participate at Wimbledon. He was responsible for famous Cricketer - off spin bowler Mr. E.A.S. Prasanna's visit to West Indies as his father was otherwise reluctant to send him. MusicHe was a great lover of music and literature. He had a special interest in Western music also. He helped the Western world discover the music of an unknown Russian composer Nikolai Karlovich Medtner (1880-1951) and financed the complete recordings of his compositions and founded the Medtner Society in 1949. He became a Licentiate of the Guild Hall of Music, London and honorary Fellow of Trinity College of Music, London, in 1945. The British Government honored him with the GCSI in 1945 and GCB in 1946. He was the first president of the Philharmonia Concert Society, London, 1948. He enabled Richard Strauss's last wish to be full filled by sponsoring an evening at Royal Albert Hall by London's Philharmonia Orchestra with German Conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler in the lead and Soprano Flagstad singing his Four Last Songs (Going to Sleep, September, Spring, At Sunset) in 1950. He was fellow & President of Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi, 1966. He had such great musicians adorning his Court like the Mysore Vasudevacharya, Veena Venkata Giriyappa, B. Devendrappa, V. Doraiswamy Iyengar, T. Chwodiah and many others. He has composed 94 Carnatic Krutis under the name Shree Vidya. Literary Works
Besides he sponsored translation of many classics from Sanskrit to Kannada as part of the Jayachamaraja Grantha Mala, including 35 parts of the Rigveda. Maharaja was a srividya upasaka and was initiated in to the secrets of srividya by shilpi siddalingaswamy -head of the of the jagadguru nagalingaswamy mutt. He built three temples in Mysore city: Bhuvaneshvari temple and Gayatri Temple are loacted inside the Mysore Palace Fort and Sri Kamakaameshwari Temple is situated on Ramanuja Road, Mysore. All the three Temples were sculptored by the maharajs's Guru and famous sculptor Shilpi Siddalingaswamy. FAMILYSisters:
