Bengal had been quite distant and cut off (by the rivers, especially the Ganga and the Brahmaputra) from the mainland of India for ages. The history of Bengal has not always followed



that of the rulers of central parts of India.

Ancient History

The ancient ages are well described in Bengal. The first recorded independent king of Bengal was Shashanka - reigning around 606. The first Buddhist Pala king of Bengal, Gopala-I came to power in 750 in Gaur by election. This event is recognized as the first democratic event in the history of modern era.

Partition of Bengal

In the 20th century, the Partition of Bengal, occurring twice, has left indelible marks on the history and psyche of the peole of Bengal.
