On September 21, 1995, much of India and the world was abuzz with the news that statues of the elephant-faced God, Ganesha, were drinking milk miraculously. Some skeptics explained it away as mass hysteria or as an example of capillary action, but many others, especially Hindus of all their different kinds, did not accept such explanations.
