Bhavnagar is a city in the Gujarat state of India. It is administrative Headquarter of Bhavnagar District.

Location

Bhavnagar is located in the peninsular part of the state of Gujarat, in the western region of India at sea level.

History of Bhavnagar city

This sprawling industrial city was founded in the 1743 by Bhav Sinhji Gohil as a port in 1743. It is still a prominent trading post for cotton products. Bhavnagar’s commercial importance is enhanced by its proximity with the Gulf of Cambay and the Arabian Sea.

Exports of cotton, ship machinary and dehydrated onions. Diamond cutting,polishing,marketing,Dimond jwellary manufaturing,etc.Re-rolling mills due to ship-breaking yard at Alang.

Tourism

The city offers vibrant shades of traditional Gujarati culture to the traveler. Bhavnagar is also a suitable stopover for the tourists who are venturing to



the Jain temples at Palitana on the Shatrunjaya Hills, Sirohi and the Blackbuck National Park, Velavadar — the home of the famous Indian Blackbuck.

Transportation

It is connected to Mumbai by air and rail links. Daily flights are currently operated by Jet Airways and Air Deccan. It was one the first city in Gujarat to have an airport.It is well connected to other major cities in Gujarat such as Vadodara and Ahmedabad by Bus services operated by private and state-owned transport corporations.

It is considered and believed that Standard, grammatically correct and pure Gujarati Language is spoken in Bhavnagar.

Bhavnagar is considered a city of education and culture. Bhavnagar has produced many poets and writers of Gujarati literature. Jhaverchand Meghani, Kavi Kant, Prajaram Raval, Dula Kag, Subodh Mehta, Govardhanram Tripathi are among them. The writer of famous Bhajan 'Vaishnava Jan To.' was written by Narsinh Mehta born in village called Talaja in Bhavnagar district. The people of Bhavnagar are considered to be generally relaxed, easy-going, and art-loving.

Jhaverchand Meghani belongs to this part ,who has contributed a lot to the Saurashtra literature and is remembered for his special style of writing. Jhaverchand Meghani is unparalleled among all the national poets of India as reported by Mahatma Gandhi.The visitors can purchase his writings in the book shop "Lok Milap", a non-profit organization run by his grand son.

Mahatma Gandhi went to college in Bhavnagar.Bhavnagar also has a few firsts,a) The first princely state to sign the accession to the Indian Union b) The first city in India to have an underground drainage?

The Modern Bhavnagar comprising Takhteshvar Plots, Krishnanagar etc… was planned by Prabhashankar Pattani.Bhavnagar was considered most beautiful city and largest city in Saurashtra till fifties of 20th century.Bhavnagar state is the first state that established major rail road network and trains in Saurashtra in 2nd half of the nineteenth century by the Great King Takhtasinghji.

The Bhavnagar University is well known in the region having nearly 23,000 students, lots of greduate colleges, 17 post greduate departments including MBA,MCA,medical college.
