Alka Yagnik (the last name is pronounced YAG-nik) is a playback singer in Bollywood, the Hindi-language Indian movie industry. She is known for her sweet, mellow, and romantic voice. The first movie that she sang in was Payal ki Jhankar (1979 - The Sound of the Anklet). Her first full-fledged song was Hum Tum Rahenge (We two will be here) in the movie Hamari Bahu Alka. She became famous with the movie Laawaaris (1981), in which she sang the famous song Mere Angne mein. She continued singing for Hindi movies through the 1980s and got her big break in 1990 with the movie Tezaab (“acid”). The song Ek do teen.. (One, two, three..) is almost a cult classic in India. Alka has sung in more than 300 movies, many in which there is more than one song sung by her. She is a well-known singer these days in India. In the West, she is best known for singing the song “Hindi Sad Diamonds” from Baz Luhrmann’s film Moulin Rouge! AwardsShe has won the Filmfare Award for the best female playback singer seven times. In 1993-94, all the five nominations for the category were bagged by her, turning the result into a foregone conclusion (She won for her work in Khalnayak).
